Crumpled Paper: Hold on to Your Hardware

Published on Saturday, March 28, 2026 by Alexander Mason

Author note: This blog post style is trying something new. Instead of trying to write long-winded about a subject I’ve researched, I wanted to give a real-time reaction to something I just have read.

These micro-blogs will be much less formal and may contain social / political commentary. The goal is for these to serve as an online bookmark for things I find interesting and my opinion on them.

Tech is going to continue to get commoditized. These new datacenters are not just going to be used for AI. As tech companies look to get returns on the trillions ($1,000,000,000,000+) of dollars they have extracted from the US economy, they are going to need to tap wider markets than just AI.

We are seeing this play out today in local governments across the U.S. where tech is lobbying for subsidized energy, water, maintenance, and labor. These all compound and directly contributing to the increased burden and fees on regular consumers.

If you think that dystopian “rented compute over owned hardware” future could never happen, think again. In fact, you’re already likely renting rather than owning in many different areas. Your means of communication are run by Meta, your music is provided by Spotify, your movies are streamed from Netflix, your data is stored in Google’s data centers and your office suite runs on Microsoft’s cloud.

We’re all subscribing our life away, we don’t own anything anymore.
